Give and Take
In his Book, “Give and Take,” author Adam Grant separates professionals into 4 categories: "givers (unselfishly like to give more than take), takers (selfishly like to take more than give), matchers (eye for an eye, quid pro quo) and fakers (takers disguised as givers)."
Up until 3 years ago, I thought "nice guys finish last" in business. In fact, studies show that they do. BUT Grant also reveals that givers are also the MOST successful (make more $, liked by colleagues, etc..) in their respective fields. Matchers, takers and fakers were the middle of the pile. But givers (with other characteristics, for instance...not doormats or chumps) dominated the top of the charts across a variety of professions.
This is not mysterious karma but instead based on evidence such as studies that show people root for givers. Matchers will even go out of their way to bring "justice" in recognizing a giver when overlooked...and, on the other hand, sacrifice their own interests to punish a selfish taker.
I have experienced first hand the SUCCESS of putting others needs before my own (because Jesus did). I love watching others flourish in life and business even if it means no benefit to me... a way bigger joy than any of my own accomplishments. As it turns out, the result is that others enjoy lifting me up and success comes much easier which makes me give more. What a great synergy and professional ecosystem!
Go out and do something purely altruistic and see what happens. Then make a lifestyle out of it at home and work.
